Major: Behavioral Biology, '25

Diego is Puerto-Rican and from Florida. He joined ¡Baila! his freshman year and is also a member of the JHU Track and Field Team. Diego finds joy in dancing, working out, playing basketball, and cooking.

​

Why did you join ¡Baila!?

"I joined ¡Baila! because I was looking forward to getting to know the Latino community on campus. I also wanted to further develop my performance skills and connect with my culture through music.

Michelle Espejo
 
Vice President

Major:  Behavioral Biology, '25

 

Michelle is from one of the southern suburbs of Chicago! Some of her hobbies include drawing and painting, crocheting, skateboarding, and being a wonderful dog-mom. She also has a love for trying new things!

 

Why did you join ¡Baila!?

“I joined ¡Baila! because I wanted to feel more connected to a group of people who appreciated the Latin culture. Also, I knew very little about how to social dance and ¡Baila! really taught me how to do that. I'm still learning every day."

Julian Gonzalez 

Secretary

Major:  Neuroscience, '26

Julian is from Oxnard, California. During his free time he indulges in his love for reading and eating. His other hobbies include sleeping, dancing, playing the guitar, going out for walks with his dog, and watching movies

Why did you join ¡Baila!?

“I joined ¡Baila! because my family has always been music oriented so dancing just became the package deal. I generally wanted to feel more connected to my roots even while being away from home which is why I wanted to join Baila and now I love it! .”

Alexa Uribe

Major: Neuroscience, '26

Alexa is from Chicago, Illinois. Her hobbies include reading, doing puzzles, and organizing. She loves using apps like Notion to organize physical spaces as well as her day-to-day life. And of course - she loves dancing!

 

Why did you join ¡Baila!?

"I joined ¡Baila! because I knew that being part of the team would allow me to embrace my passion for Latin dance while also meeting amazing people with different cultural backgrounds along the way! As a freshman, finding my way through Hopkins became 10x easier and this continues to be the case the more that I get to call ¡Baila! my on campus family."

Vanessa Blancas
 
Publicity & Marketing Chair

Major: Public Health Studies, '26

 

Vanessa is Mexican and lives in Los Angeles, CA. During her free time she likes to paint, read, and add to her ever growing music library. She also loves to travel and discover new places to eat around Baltimore!

 

Why did you join ¡Baila!?

"I found out about ¡Baila! while researching Hopkins during my junior year of high school and it immediately sparked my interest. As someone who began dancing at a young age, it was important for me to find a group that allowed me to continue pursing it while in college. Additionally, this group allowed me to feel immersed in my culture and has become my comfort away from home.”

Hadeed is originally from Pakistan but lives in San Diego, CA. He loves sketching, playing tennis, and cooking. Additionally, he is  on the pre-law track at Hopkins!

Why did you join ¡Baila!?

“I joined ¡Baila! because I wanted to learn more about partner dancing and also saw what a family Baila was to each other and what a supportive community the group created!.”

Anusha Sarkar

Major: Cognitive Science & Spanish, '24

​

Anusha is from Chester, NJ and she is Indian. She has danced since she was 10, learning mostly modern and ballet before coming to college and joining ¡Baila!. She loves houseplants, iced chai lattes, and taking pictures of the moon.

 

Why did you join ¡Baila!?

“I originally wanted to join ¡Baila! because it would be an opportunity to explore new styles of dance. The sense of home I gained along the way has made it that much easier to go outside of my comfort zone as a dancer. I’ve loved growing with the team in the last year and look forward to all our adventures this year”.

Zo is from Reading, PA. They like playing their cello, going on walks, and dancing to bachata.

“I joined ¡Baila! to try out something new and be more connected to my latin roots. After an amazing year, I see them as my family at Hopkins and am excited to watch us all grow”.
